GEO-IDEA explores how the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) Data Sharing and Data Management Principles can be applied to in-situ Earth observation data to support European environmental monitoring, with a focus on climate change adaptation.
The project supports the European Environment Agency (EEA) by providing expertise in geospatial data management and strengthening links with EU environmental and climate activities and GEO initiatives.
It delivers practical showcases, including analysis of EU-funded research projects and their FAIR alignment, comparison of climate and disaster data reporting frameworks, and development of a methodology to capture user needs and match them with available in-situ data.
GEO-IDEA builds on the legacy of the InCASE project (InCASE - Evenflow) and complements its sister project COP-IDEA (link to COP-IDEA entry), supporting the in-situ component of the Copernicus Programme.
In its second phase (July 2026 – March 2027), GEO-IDEA shifts from showcasing good practice to closing the gap between in-situ data needs and available data. The project extends the GEO in-situ data requirements database (G-REQS) and, on the supply side, maps and engages the data provider landscape: research infrastructures, private-sector providers in Europe and EU-funded projects, with practical guidance on where and how to make in-situ data available. It also tests the use of AI to match provider data products against documented requirements. Support to the GEO working groups on in-situ data and data sharing principles continues throughout.
Evenflow provides technical leadership and acts as the technical liaison with the client, leads the GEO-related activities on in-situ data and Data Management Principles, and manages the work on EU-funded R&I projects across both phases. In the first phase it drove the project’s strategic guidance on observing networks; in the second it leads the task on in-situ data gaps and provider engagement, including the private-sector survey.
